How a penetration test works
Every stage is confirmed in writing and every testing window is set in UK time. Here is what happens, what we need and what you get.
What happens, in order
- ScopingA call of around thirty minutes. We confirm the targets, user roles, environments, deadlines and any audit the test supports. You receive a written scope and a fixed-price proposal sized in tester-days.
- Authorisation and rules of engagementBefore anyone touches a system, you sign written authorisation. The rules of engagement record test dates, our source IP addresses, out-of-bounds systems, safe hours for production, and who to call if something looks wrong. Where a third party hosts your systems, we confirm their testing policy first.
- TestingTesters map the attack surface, then work through it by hand, using OWASP, PTES and NIST SP 800-115 as the backbone. Tools widen coverage; people decide what to try next. Exploitation stays within the limits you agreed.
- Real-time critical alertsIf we confirm a critical issue, such as exposed customer data or a route to full admin access, your named contact hears about it straight away with enough detail to act. You do not wait for the report.
- ReportingA single document written for two audiences: leaders who need the risk in one page, and engineers who need to reproduce and fix each issue.
- DebriefA call with your team to walk through the findings, agree priorities and answer questions about fixes.
- Retest & attestation letterWhen you tell us fixes are live, we re-check each reported issue at no extra cost, update its status and issue a letter summarising the test and its outcome that you can share with customers or auditors.
What is in the report
Everything an auditor, a buyer's security team or a developer is likely to ask for.
Unsure how to read severity scores? Our CVSS 4.0 guide explains the metrics, and the remediation and retesting guide covers what to do after the report lands.
A smooth test starts before day one
- A named technical contact who can answer questions during testing
- Test accounts for each role, ideally two per role for cross-account checks
- A stable environment that will not be redeployed mid-test
- API docs, schemas or a Postman collection where available
- Allow-listing of our source IPs where a firewall or WAF would block us
Our data-handling commitments
- Signed written authorisation before any testing
- NDA on request, signed before you share sensitive detail
- Only the minimum data needed to prove an issue is captured
- Evidence stored encrypted, with access limited to the engagement team
- Reports delivered through access-controlled channels
- Credentials and accounts returned or disabled when testing ends
- Working files erased once the retention period you chose runs out
Standards behind the method
We pick the guide that fits each target and say which ones we used in the report.
- OWASP WSTG
- OWASP ASVS
- OWASP API Security Top 10
- OWASP MASVS / MASTG
- OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications
- CVSS v4.0
- CWE
- PTES
- MITRE ATT&CK
- NIST SP 800-115
- CWE
- CIS Benchmarks
Need the test to support PCI DSS v4.0.1 Requirement 11.4 or ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Annex A 8.8? Say so at scoping and we will shape the scope and report around it. See compliance pentesting.
